Introduction and Variations on "Trockne Blumen"

“trockne blumen” (or “dry flowers”) is a song from franz schubert’s song cycle “die schöne müllerin,” a group of 25 songs that tell the story of a young man who falls in love with a woman. most of the songs are sung from the man’s perspective, two are sung from a narrator’s perspective, and one is from a river’s perspective. none are sung from the woman’s perspective. his feelings aren’t reciprocated, and his jealousy and possessiveness eventually drive him to suicide. in this song, the man compares the woman’s eyes to forget-me-not flowers. he laments that the woman never paid him any attention in life, but celebrates that she’ll finally think of him in death.

the medieval suite was inspired by characters and events described in barbara tuchman’s a distant mirror, a history of fourteenth-century france. it was a violent, bitter century of extensive wars, and ms. tuchman sees it as something of a reflection of our own. the "black knight" was a valiant, violent prince, barred from his beloved fighting by a wasting disease. the fourteenth century was a low point for the catholic church with warring popes in rome and avignon, and “the drunken friar” was apparently a common sight.

this suite is written for classical flute and jazz piano. it’s a standard for flutists who want to pretend to play jazz, because it highlights the flutist’s classical strengths while the pianist runs circles around her.

touching the ether reflects upon countless lateral and eternal connections between people; between each other access the world and through generations stretching both back and forwards in time. this is viewed both through the personal prism of close relationships, and a wider feeling of the fluidity of the complex consequential interactions around us. it attempts to glimpse at these ripples of action and reaction, both direct and indirect, which may be perceived to fade and coalesce, or may be viewed as what [the composer] calls ‘time dominoes’ whose effect could be of a quite different nature. it is a feeling of ‘touching the ether.’

fanmi imèn is haitian creole for maya angelou’s famous work, human family. both the musical and literary poems acknowledge differences within mankind, either due to ethnicity, background, or geography, but angelou’s poetic refrain: “we are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike,” reaffirms our humanity as a reminder of unity.
